Act One: Salem residents

THOUGHTS ABOUT SALEM RESIDENTS

  • Forefathers were Puritans persecuted in England

  • Believed others corrupt

  • Europeans considered US missionaries a barbaric frontier and a sect of fanatics

  • No holidays - only occasional celebrations

  • Plenty who did not conform

  • Hard working

  • Strict morals

  • Difficult conditions: hard winters, unfertile soil

  • Minded each other's business

  • Suspicious

  • Told on each other to magistrates

  • Dangers of starting again in the new world were fading and frustrations and envy emerging

  • Close to wilderness

  • Afraid of heathens who they thought were devilish

  • Parochial

  • Missionaries who failed to convert native Americans

  • Resistant

  • Disciplined

  • Dedicated

  • Communal

  • Long suffering

  • Theocratic - combined state and religion

  • Repressed

  • Long held hatreds of neighbours

  • Jealousy

Word Frequency in "The Crucible"

Many of the most frequent words in the Wordle, with the common words, are words such as "I" and "You". This makes me think that the play "The Crucible"is revolved around people and no the actual thought of witchcraft. Other word frequently mentioned are character names the most used are those of Proctor, Danforth and Parris. We can conclude from this that these characters are most likely to be the main characters of the play.

The Crucible

Wordle of The Crucible

The above two wordle's have taken out all the common words.

The wordle above has included all the most common words.

From the wordle above I can deduce that the play is about religion and very accusative.

The Witch Hunt

Every one in the room heard it, I heard it, I just can't believe I said it. "Yes". One word that can control your future. The hole village was in the room. They have all seen the trials, the judges shouting at you, accusing you, but none of them know what it feels like. I have seen the extreme trials, being put in a cage like a monster, begging for your life.

My family were sitting there with the looks of despair on their faces, what have I done? Why did I say that word? I've seen the trials were people have said yes and most of them live, the judges want to make examples of them show the rest of Salem what a witch looks like. All that I know now is I need to live, what ever happens I need to live.

Mary Howard was my neighbour, she was accused of making a broom fly across the room. Her trial was six weeks long. Every day she said No. "Are you a witch!?" They asked her, shouted at her. All she said was "No". Her son was at every appearance she made, even her last, she said she was innocent all she told was the truth and her son had to see her body drop.

I know what happens, I know how to survive, I know what I need to do.

What is tragedy?

My first thoughts about tragedy are that it is made so then every one who watches can relate to it even though it is often exaggerated for example when the greeks made plays about tragedy they managed to put everything in one day and it would still be believable, a lot alike modern soap operas. Tragedy is based on the misfortune of others this can link people together as misfortune is the universal suffering. Tragedy also plays a major part in day to day life as tragedy is alike to catharsis, for example sometimes you feel better after crying or being sick. Tragedy is most oftenly shown within plays or TV programs so then they are easily accessible.

In What Way could the five core values help me to learn in the English classroom and what values can I use to improve my learning?

The first core value, courage, can help me because I will challenge myself and improve. You also need the courage to set your aims high, for example an A* instead of an A. The second value, Integrity, can help you learn because you have to be honest with your self about your work and if you could work harder. The third value, Responsibility, I think is very important and links in to integrity, you need to take responsibility for your work, just like you have to be honest about your work. The fourth value, Respect is important for your learning because you need to respect your classmates and teachers to make a better learning and working environment. Lastly, the value of kindness is a great value in the English classroom because if your classmates are unkind to you, you would not then have the courage to challenge your self to improve and would then create a bad learning environment.
